News: 14 hours agoThe Vikings placed McCarthy (knee) on injured reserve Friday.
Spin: Minnesota signed quarterback Matt Corral in a corresponding transaction. Head coach Kevin O'Connell had already ruled McCarthy, the No. 10 overall pick in April's draft, out for the season, so his official placement on injured reserve was expected. McCarthy will turn his attention to making a recovery from the surgery he underwent Wednesday to make a full repair of the meniscus in his right knee, while the Vikings turn to Sam Darnold as the Week 1 starter. Corral joins Nick Mullens and second-year quarterback Jaren Hall behind Darnold on the depth chart.
ESPN Fantasy Projection: The 10th overall pick of the 2024 NFL draft, McCarthy suffered a meniscus injury during the preseason and will miss his rookie campaign. McCarthy was 27-1 as a starter at Michigan and eventually will get to work with with Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison and T.J. Hockenson. He won't be mistaken for a running QB, but McCarthy has the ability to scramble and use his legs effectively to extend plays and keep drives alive. Keep McCarthy stashed in dynasty as he'll be a popular 2025 breakout candidate.
